Plumber Materials Cost Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Most plumbers apply a materials markup of 20—35% on top of their supplier cost. A 27% markup is common for general work — it covers the time spent sourcing, ordering, and handling materials plus a reasonable contribution to profit. For speciality or hard-to-source items, markups of 40—50% are justified. Never charge clients the same price you paid at the trade counter — your time and logistics costs are real.
For most residential plumbing work, materials represent 20—30% of the total job value. On labor-heavy jobs like leak diagnostics or drain cleaning, materials may be under 10%. On fixture-heavy jobs like full bathroom installs, materials can reach 40—50%. The industry average sits around 25%, which is why this calculator defaults to that proportion for a $1,200 job.
This is a personal business decision. Many plumbers present a single job price rather than itemising materials and labor separately — it avoids clients questioning your markup and simplifies the invoice. Others itemise to build trust, especially on larger jobs. If you do itemise, charge the marked-up material price (not your cost) and show labor separately.
Common plumbing materials to track include: copper or PEX pipe (priced per foot or metre), valves (ball valves, gate valves, check valves), pipe fittings (elbows, tees, couplings), fixtures (taps, toilets, showerheads), seals, washers and O-rings, solder and flux, thread seal tape, and drain/waste fittings. Tracking these per job helps you build an accurate materials budget for future quotes.
For van stock items like fittings, tape, and washers, many plumbers use a flat "consumables" line in their quotes — typically $15—$40 per job — rather than tracking every small item. For larger stocked items like valves or pipe sections, deduct them from your van stock log and charge at marked-up cost. Keeping a simple van inventory spreadsheet lets you reorder before you run out on a job.
