Plumber Hourly Rate Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Most independent plumbers charge between $75 and $110 per hour depending on their location, specialization, and overhead. Emergency or after-hours work typically commands a premium of 1.5x to 2x the standard rate. Urban markets in cities like New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago often see rates at $110 or above, while rural areas may sit closer to $75.
Add your target annual income to your total annual overhead costs, then divide by the number of billable hours you expect to work in a year. For example, if you want to earn $80,000 and have $18,000 in overhead, you need to generate $98,000. If you bill 1,380 hours a year (30 hours per week — 46 weeks), your minimum rate is about $71/hr. Always add a buffer of 15—20% on top for profit and slow periods.
Not every hour you work is billable. Quoting jobs, driving between sites, buying materials, invoicing, and admin work all eat into your day. Most solo plumbers find that only 60—70% of their working time is actually billable. If you work 45 hours a week, budget for 28—32 truly billable hours. This calculator defaults to 30 billable hours per week to reflect that reality.
Not necessarily. Many plumbers use a tiered rate structure: a standard rate for routine maintenance and minor repairs, a higher rate for complex work like re-piping or bathroom installations, and an emergency call-out rate for urgent after-hours jobs. A baseline of $85/hr with a $150/hr emergency surcharge is a common structure for established plumbing businesses.
Overhead includes all business costs that aren't tied directly to a specific job: van payments and insurance, tool maintenance and replacement, business insurance, licensing and registration fees, phone, software, accounting, and any advertising. For a sole-trader plumber, $15,000—$22,000 per year in overhead is typical. This calculator defaults to $18,000 as a realistic mid-range starting point.
