Most independent roofers charge between $65 and $95 per hour depending on location, roof type, and pitch complexity. Metal roofing specialists, flat roof contractors, and those working in high cost-of-living markets often charge $95—$120/hr. Many roofing jobs are priced on a per-square (100 sq ft) basis rather than pure hourly, but knowing your effective hourly rate is essential for ensuring your per-square pricing actually covers your costs and leaves a healthy margin.
Add your target annual income to your total annual overhead, then divide by your expected billable hours. If you want to earn $80,000 and have $18,000 in overhead, you need $98,000 in revenue. At 30 billable hours per week over 46 weeks, that is 1,380 hours, giving a minimum rate of about $71/hr. Add 20—25% for profit and slow periods to arrive at a recommended rate of around $88/hr — within the typical roofer range. Roofing is physically demanding with real injury risk, which also justifies a rate toward the upper end.
Rain, high winds, snow, and extreme heat all prevent roof work. Most roofers in northern US states realistically lose 6—10 weeks of productive outdoor work per year to weather alone, on top of holidays and downtime. This is why this calculator defaults to 46 working weeks — building in weather-related downtime from the start means your rate calculation accurately reflects real earning potential rather than an optimistic theoretical maximum.
Most residential roofers price by the square (per 100 sq ft) for shingle replacement and re-roof work. However, your per-square rate must still be derived from your hourly labor cost plus materials plus margin. Start with your hourly rate, estimate how many squares your crew can complete per day, and build your per-square rate from there. Flat and specialty roofing work is more commonly time-and-materials priced. This calculator helps you establish the hourly floor that your per-square pricing must respect.
Overhead for a roofer includes truck and trailer payments and insurance, roofing equipment and tool maintenance, general liability insurance, workers compensation (which is very high for roofers — often 15—25% of payroll), business Licenses, safety gear, phone, software, and advertising. For a sole-trader roofer, $15,000—$22,000 per year in overhead is typical. Workers comp and liability insurance alone can account for a significant portion of that total given the industry's risk profile.
