Fence Contractor Quoting — Frequently Asked Questions

Start with your true costs: materials + labor at your full rate (including overhead). Then apply your target margin of 20—30%. For a $2,055 cost job targeting 25% margin, your quote is $2,055 — (1 - 0.25) = $2,740. Never add a percentage on top of cost — that's markup, not margin.
Use $60—$90/hr depending on your market, skill level and whether you have a crew. Your rate must cover not just your wage but also overhead (vehicle, insurance, tools). A common mistake is using a wage rate without overhead, which eats into profit on every job.
Both work. Linear-foot pricing ($10—$30/ft depending on fence type) is fast for residential cedar or chain link. Job-based quoting gives you more accuracy on mixed terrain, gates, corner posts, and premium materials. Use linear-foot as a sanity check and job-based quoting as your actual price.
Target 20—30% gross margin for residential fence work. Commercial and HOA projects may allow slightly lower margins due to volume, but should rarely go below 18%. If your margin is under 20% on every job, you likely have an overhead or pricing issue rather than a cost problem.
Add a 5—10% material contingency to your quotes and state in writing that quoted material costs are valid for 30 days. Lumber and hardware prices can shift significantly. For larger jobs, consider pricing materials separately or ordering immediately after deposit to lock in costs.
