Electrician Materials Cost Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Most electricians apply a markup of 15—25% on materials. A 20% markup is common for standard residential work — it covers the time spent ordering, picking up, and handling materials plus a contribution to profit. For speciality items, hard-to-source components, or materials you need to stock on your van, markups of 25—35% are reasonable. Never pass materials through at cost — your logistics time is a real business expense.
For most residential electrical work, materials represent 15—25% of the total job value. labor-heavy jobs like troubleshooting and fault-finding may have materials below 10%. Material-heavy jobs like full rewires or panel upgrades can push 35—45%. The industry average for a general residential electrician sits around 20%, which is why this calculator defaults to that proportion for an $800 job.
Many electricians present a single job price rather than breaking out materials and labor, which avoids client scrutiny of the markup. Others itemise to build transparency and trust on larger jobs. If you do itemise materials on the invoice, charge the marked-up price — not your cost — and label the line "Materials" rather than showing a supplier receipt. Your markup is legitimate compensation for sourcing, storing, and managing materials.
Common electrical materials to track include: wire by gauge and length (12/2, 14/2, 10/3 Romex), circuit breakers by amperage, outlets and switches (standard, GFCI, AFCI), conduit and fittings, wire connectors and junction boxes, electrical tape and cable staples, and fixture mounting hardware. Tracking these per job lets you build an accurate materials budget for future quotes of the same type.
For small consumables — wire nuts, staples, tape, screws — many electricians add a flat "consumables" line of $10—$25 per job rather than tracking every small item. For larger van-stocked items like breakers, outlets, or wire spools, deduct them from your inventory log and charge at marked-up cost. Maintaining a simple van stock spreadsheet helps you reorder before you run short on a job site and ensures you're capturing the cost of every material used.
