Concrete Contractor Quote Estimator — Frequently Asked Questions

A concrete quote should specify the scope (area in sq ft, thickness, finish type), materials included, estimated duration, and total price. Most concrete contractors quote a single price rather than breaking out line items. Use this estimator to calculate your internal cost and margin, then present the client a clean total with a clear scope description.
Aim for 20—30% profit margin on concrete jobs. On a $5,000 pour, that's $1,000—$1,500 in net profit. Decorative work warrants the upper end or higher. Don't let clients negotiate your margin — instead, offer to reduce scope (smaller area, simpler finish) rather than cutting your margin below 20%.
Estimate total man-hours for the job — prep, pour, finish, and cleanup — and multiply by your hourly rate. Don't forget setup and teardown time. A 400 sq ft driveway typically takes a 2-person crew 6—8 hours including prep, so 12—16 man-hours at $80/hr = $960—$1,280 in labor. Always track actual vs estimated hours to improve future quotes.
No — present a total price and scope of work. Revealing your margin opens the door to margin negotiation rather than scope negotiation. If pressed, explain that your price includes skilled labor, quality materials, proper sub-base preparation, and a warranty on your workmanship — all of which justify the price without exposing your numbers.
Get supplier quotes for materials first. Then estimate labor conservatively — add 25—30% buffer to your best guess for an unfamiliar job type. Price at $80/hr minimum and target a 25% margin. If you win the job, track every hour carefully. If you lose it, your price was probably right — don't chase work by cutting margin on jobs you're unsure about.
